Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic is a state-owned polytechnic that is located in Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State. The Polytechnic was established by the state government of Akwa Ibom State in the year 1991 after the creation of the state from Cross River State.
After the creation of Akwa Ibom State out of Cross River in 1987, the new state found it fit to establish its own polytechnic to contribute to the development of the state, and thus, in 1992, the new polytechnic was established based on the edict of law of Akwa Ibom State of the year 1991.
The official commissioning of the polytechnic was done the same year it was established, which happens to be on the 4th Friday of January 1992. At the beginning of the polytechnic, the polytechnic had a staff strength of 492, which includes the academic and non-academic staff of the institution.
The Polytechnic, in the year 1992, started with students with just below 1000, numbering 961, which is a huge number for a newly established polytechnic, but despite the success, the polytechnic suffered a setback in the 90s, a few years after its establishment, through deaccreditation of some of the accredited courses in the institution.
Though the polytechnic suffered a setback through the deaccreditation of some courses in the institution, the polytechnic is making a full recovery by re-accrediting the courses by the National Board for Technical Education.
